How it works

This uses the standard amortizing-loan formula — the same math behind a mortgage or car loan payment — to spread principal and interest into equal monthly payments over the loan term. Early payments are weighted more toward interest and later ones more toward principal, even though the payment amount itself stays flat the whole time.

It's meant for a quick estimate while you're comparing offers, not a final number — actual loan terms often include origination fees, closing costs, or a variable rate that this calculator doesn't account for. Ask any lender for the full APR, not just the headline interest rate, since that's the number that actually reflects the total cost of borrowing.

A worked example: a $20,000 loan at 8% for 4 years is 48 monthly payments at a monthly rate of about 0.667%. The payment comes to about $488.26, you repay $23,436.41 in total, and the interest cost is $3,436.41.

The result assumes a fixed rate, equal monthly payments and no fees. Real loans can include origination fees, variable rates or a balloon payment, so treat this as an estimate and compare it with the lender's own figures, including the total cost and any penalty for repaying early.

Frequently asked questions

Q.Does this include fees like origination charges?

No — this calculates principal and interest only, based on a standard amortizing loan. Origination fees, closing costs, and prepayment penalties vary by lender and aren't included, so check your loan terms for the full cost.

Q.What interest rate should I expect for a small business loan?

It depends heavily on the lender, your credit, and the loan type — SBA loans and bank loans tend to run lower, while online and merchant cash advance lenders often charge significantly more. Compare the actual APR, not just the headline rate.

Q.Is this the same as a monthly payment estimator?

Yes — loan payment calculator, loan calculator, business loan calculator, and monthly payment estimator all describe the same tool: one that spreads a loan's principal and interest into equal monthly payments.
